Research opportunities are available in a number of departments at Rush for nurses with a range of educational preparation from BSN to PhD. Our nurse researchers are vital to the success of obtaining grants, conducting studies, and disseminating the results at conferences and in publications. To strengthen the link between nursing practice and nursing research, the College of Nursing and Division of Nursing created the Center for Clinical Research and Scholarship. The Center provides support for nurses to devote time to clinical research projects throughout the medical center.
Outside the Division of Nursing, there are also opportunities for nurses to participate in research in other departments of the medical center, such as Infectious Disease, Neurology, Preventive Medicine, the Alzheimer’s Disease Center, and more. Nurses in these areas can practice with considerable independence in managing research studies with collegial support from physicians and principal investigators.
The Case Management department at Rush provides a variety of services such as: Case Management, Discharge Planning, Social Work, Pre-admission and Concurrent Certification, Denial Appeals/Management and Clinical Documentation Management. This fast-paced department offers a stimulating, yet supportive environment for the nurse or social work professional. Our hallmarks include a collaborative interdisciplinary model, with a patient centered focus, proactive approach and commitment to teamwork with internal and external agencies to achieve quality patient outcomes.
In our progressive Quality Improvement department, a variety of professional backgrounds contribute to our commitment to improvements in patient quality and safety. Nurses have made significant contributions as Patient Education Coordinators, Coordinators for Accreditation and Licensure, Quality Consultants and Clinical Nurse Reviewers.
Nurses utilize their clinical knowledge and expertise as they collaborate with other professionals in Risk Management to manage various legal situations, handle patient care questions and provide trusted guidance on a number of policies to members of the Rush Medical Center community.
Our Specialty departments offer you plenty of opportunities to utilize your skills in focused areas of our medical center. For example, our University Transplant coordinates the evaluation and waiting process for patients requiring kidney, liver or pancreas transplantation. We also manage the post-transplant follow-up care for the life of the patient and evaluate as well as treat vascular access needs for dialysis patients. Our research program coordinates various clinical trials across the spectrum of transplant patient care in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies and physicians. It’s a challenging environment that requires expertise and very attentive care. From pre-transplant coordinators to post-transplant coordinators to support staff, we offer a professional environment that has the full support and resource dedication of senior leadership. It’s one of the reasons why our liver transplant team is known for the shortest median time to transplant – three months, compared to the national average of 12 months.
Rush University Medical Center was among 22 hospitals in Illinois to be awarded the national Medal of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for our work in saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation. Rush worked in collaboration with Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, and was honored for exemplary leadership and commitment to organ donors, donor families, and the nearly 104,000 patients on the national transplant waiting list.
